Our Strategy

To address the challenges facing the Mediterranean Sea, Save the Med developed its Strategy following a thorough analysis and in-depth process led by its own team and in consultation with its Board of Directors, partners and collaborators as well as experts.

A central aspect of our Strategy is complementing the prevailing top-down approach in conservation—which has primarily focused on enforcing behavioural change through policies and regulations—with a bottom-up, collaborative approach. Engaging citizens and stakeholders at every level through holistic, participatory projects, and fostering stewardship, are at the core of our mission to create lasting, positive change.

It places a strong emphasis on engaging citizens and stakeholders at every level through holistic and participatory projects, promoting stewardship to achieve long-lasting positive change.

The three pillars explained

To most effectively address the challenges facing the Mediterranean basin, our Strategy highlights three key pillars that need strengthening across environmental efforts: a holistic approach, community engagement, and a meaningful collaboration across all sectors.

Holistic approach

A holistic approach recognises the interdependence between biodiversity, people and the planet, taking into account all scientific, socio-cultural, economic, environmental and governance dimensions when looking at solutions. It embraces the involvement of various stakeholders in decision-making processes.

Community engagement

Effective engagement and representation of local communities is crucial as they are the primary custodians of natural resources. They are best-placed to identify threats and needs, help ensure policies reflect socio-economic and cultural specifics and champion a bottom-up approach in promoting the return of biodiversity.

Meaningful collaboration

In our increasingly interconnected and global world, it is essential to develop collaborative approaches aimed at generating greater collective impact by involving diverse stakeholders in collective action, including policymakers, scientists, NGOs, local communities, government authorities, and the private sector.
