Our approach

At Save the Med, we're dedicated to driving and supporting meaningful change. While our main work is in the Balearic Islands, we design our projects to be easily adapted for use in other regions within and beyond the Mediterranean Basin.

Our experience has taught us that lasting marine regeneration requires a comprehensive framework that recognises the inseparable link between land and sea and moves beyond passive conservation towards active ecosystem recovery. A cornerstone of our strategy is therefore our Areas Under Regeneration (AUR) approach. By tackling environmental degradation holistically across the Balearic bioregion, this integrative, pioneering model actively restores biodiversity and addresses cross-cutting environmental challenges.

Central to the AUR approach is working with local groups and community-led initiatives to safeguard their surrounding environment through the collective design and implementation of regenerative practices. This ensures environmental initiatives are always locally and culturally relevant, responsive to change, and collectively owned. We currently apply the AUR approach in the municipalities of Andratx and Pollença, situated at each end of the Serra de Tramuntana Mountain Range. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its rich flora and fauna and unique cultural landscape, this international status highlights the deep symbiosis between nature and human activity developed over centuries. This fascinating blend of nature and heritage inspires community-led projects, contributing to a lasting restoration of biodiversity.
