Initiatives
Save the Med is dedicated to the regeneration of the Mediterranean basin through a range of impactful projects. These initiatives span from environmental education to community engagement, all aimed at promoting regenerative practices and increasing ecological awareness. Grounded in science and driven by collaboration, each project emphasises the importance of community involvement and collective action in restoring and preserving the region's natural resources for future generations.
Sa Dragonera Blava
The Sa Dragonera Blava project is dedicated to the regeneration of Sa Dragonera Island and its surrounding areas in the Municipality of Andratx. Its premise is a holistic and bottom-up approach that pursues environmental, cultural, and socio-economic progress by integrating terrestrial and marine ecosystems, all while empowering the community through active engagement and participatory governance.
U Nord Blau
Similar to the Sa Dragonera Blava project, U Nord Blau (or the Blue North) in the municipality of Pollença, Mallorca, is central to Save the Med’s work. In partnership with local NGO Arrels Marines, the project supports the development of regenerative cultures with custodian communities by modelling a bottom-up and investigative approach to facilitate scientific understanding, connect local communities with the sea, and champion participatory governance amongst citizens.
HAPI Method
The HAPI Method is an innovative approach to evaluate the environmental impact of single use products with emphasis on plastics which helps businesses identify and choose sustainable alternatives, preventing waste generation.
By providing tools, methodologies and guidance, the method supports organisations, companies and municipalities in making informed decisions, promoting more responsible consumption practices and contributing to avoid plastic pollution.
Game Changers
The Changemakers project provides students from several schools in Mallorca with the opportunity to create innovative proposals to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic. Students also learn in greater depth about the complex challenges and impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems by joining scientific expeditions and workshops.
Changemakers is more than just a school project—it's a movement designed to raise awareness and foster critical thinking among the younger generations and empower them to actively be a part of creating solutions for a future without plastic.
Dos Manos
The Dos Manos project aims to contribute to the prevention of plastic pollution through a practical education programme for schools where students take part in citizen-science activities through which they collect, categorise, and analyse plastic waste on the beach. The project raises awareness and inspires students to take action in reducing plastic consumption, ultimately lowering demand and preventing environmental pollution.
Manta Tagging
The Manta project focuses on the biology and the ecology of the endangered Spinetail devil ray (Mobula mobular) in the Mediterranean Sea. It aims to uncover its migration patterns, connectivity between subpopulations and its behaviour, providing essential data for effective conservation strategies, contributing to the protection of the species and supporting broader conservation efforts.
Shark BRUV
The Shark BRUV project is a collaborative effort between Save the Med and Shark Med aimed at the conservation of sharks in the Mediterranean. By using BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video) boards with scientific and audiovisual equipment, the project collects crucial data on shark populations and their threats. This project aims to debunk myths about sharks being dangerous to humans, generate public support for their protection, and influence changes in fisheries policies.
