Marine Protected Area Technician

Project Coordinator - "Discover Your MPA Sa Dragonera"

Description:

Save The Med is a non-profit marine regeneration organisation based in Mallorca. One of the core pillars of our work are Marine Protected Areas (MPA). Our team of experienced marine scientists and divers work closely with local authorities and stakeholders to create an effectively managed network of Marine Protected Areas around the Balearic Islands, allowing marine ecosystems to recover and thrive together with prospering local communities and industries.

Since the summer of 2019 Save The Med is running the MPA community engagement project “Discover your Marine Protected Area of Sa Dragonera”The project is based on the idea that for a true protection of a site like an MPA, we need to start acting differently as individuals to make a change as society. This change must be led by a collaborative attitude, as it is only by acting together as a network that we will be able to achieve a well-managed MPA. To achieve this we want to visualise the values of the MPA and support local initiatives, as part of a strategy to regenerate the marine ecosystems of Sa Dragonera.

Since the project’s launch we have realised creative community events with adults, children and stakeholders, created informative and visual materials and, based on a local initiative, launched the Instagram account of Xarxa Dragonera Blava. Currently we are working towards the development of a Marine Custody programme within the area of Andratx.

Due to internal changes, we are now looking for a project coordinator to manage the community engagement project “Discover your Marine Protected Area of Sa Dragonera” alongside a Marine Protected Area technician. Together, the team is responsible for engaging the community around the Sa Dragonera MPA in its pro-active care by delivering informative communication, promoting marine custody between stakeholders, and promoting the MPA and its values.

The successful applicant will be joining the project at a very exciting time and become an integral part of the MPA-team. The position will start as a 50% employment (as soon as possible) and will be changed to a full-time position after a probation period of three months.

Main Responsibility Areas & Key Tasks:

Project Coordination:

  • Coordinate with different departments within STM: Multimedia, Communications, Education, Baleares Sense Plàstic and the graphic designer.
  • Coordinate with other organisations and public entities involved in the project.
  • Coordinate different sub-initiatives and campaigns within the project with different stakeholders.
  • Establish milestones to accomplish to work towards behavioural change within the community.
  • Maintain close communication with the scientific team on conservation strategies.

Communication:

  • Create engaging Social Media posts on the project’s account.
  • Communicate (written, oral and give interviews) in Catalan, Spanish and English.
  • Support in the translation and revision of video subtitles for the project.
  • Update information on the project’s new website.

Event Management:

  • Plan and coordinate community events, workshops, and meetings.

Reporting:

  • Provide budget and content reports to the office coordinator and funders.
  • Provide monthly internal content reports.

Requirements:

  • Passion for Save The Med’s work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Marine Sciences or similar.
  • Sound knowledge about marine conservation and sustainable fishing (either professional or private interest).
  • Strong social skills.
  • Capability to proactively obtain information and answers from colleagues, stakeholders and relevant sources.
  • B2 level or higher in Spanish, English, and Catalan.
  • Knowledge and experience in project management is desirable.
  • Experience in working with NGOs, social and/or community movements as well as (local) administration insights will be valuable.
  • Driving licence and car.

We are looking for a pro-active person with a great ability to multitask and prioritise a busy workload, a willingness to muck in on all tasks big and small who is:

  • Confident about behavioural change within the community to become custodians of their MPA.
  • Creative about and inspired by campaigning for the MPA Sa Dragonera to thrive.
